Nunawading Basketball News

The National Basketball League (NBL) and National Basketball Association (NBA) made a landmark announcement today which will see a series of exhibition games take place as part of the 2017 NBA preseason in October featuring three Australian based NBL teams.

The Brisbane Bullets who boast Nunawading Basketball representative Daniel Kickert will match up against the iconic Phoenix Suns at Talking Stick Resort Arena (Phoenix) on October 13.

“This a great opportunity for all the players and we can’t wait to get to the US in October and take on the Phoenix Suns,” Kickert said.

The Bullets are one of three NBL teams travelling to the US,w ith the Sydney Kings scheduled to take on the Utah Jazz (October 2) whilst the Oklahoma City Thunder will play host to Melbourne United (October 8).

“This is a huge moment for Australian basketball. For the NBL to be able to play some of the biggest teams in the world shows how far our league has come. I want to thank the NBA for this exciting opportunity to showcase the NBL on the world stage.” NBL Executive Chairman Larry Kestelman said.

“For our teams to be chosen to come and play in the NBA preseason is a great endorsement of the NBL and Australian basketball. We currently have a number of Australians playing in the NBA, strong national teams in the Boomers and Opals, record participation levels and a flourishing national competition. This opportunity will only build more excitement ahead of the NBL season starting on Oct. 5.”

Kickert is no stranger to playing on the big stage in the US having completed his collegiate career at St Mary’s College, the same program that played a significant role in the development of Australian NBA stars Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova. During his time at St Mary’s, the former EBee’s and Waverley Basketball Club junior was named All West Coast Conference First Team three straight times and finished his career ranked first in the St Mary’s record books with 1,868 points.
