MCDONALD SIGNS ON FOR NBL1 SEASON

NUNAWADING BASKETBALL | The Nunawading ‘Burwood One’ Spectres are excited to confirm the return of Shane McDonald for the inaugural NBL1 season. His addition to the roster making it his 14th season with the Spectres.

“I have always taken great pride in representing Nunawading and I am grateful to be in a position to do this for another season,” McDonald said.

“I’m extremely proud of the team culture that has led to sustained success at the club and I’m looking forward to being a part of many more wins in 2019.”

Following on from the 2018 SEABL season, it was widely speculated that McDonald may shift his focus into coaching full-time, the all-time SEABL assists leader already heading the basketball program at Maribyrnong Sports Academy, whilst also helping steer the Victorian U20 Men towards back to back National Championship success as an Assistant Coach. For the Spectres though, that transition is best served with McDonald still at the helm of their offensive structure.

“It is also important to me that I assist and fast track the development of our next group of core players that are looking to pave their own legacy as a Spectres, whilst also providing the team with sustained success both on and off the court.”

McDonald appeared in 20 games for the Spectres last year, returning averages of 9.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.3 assists, guiding Nunawading to a SEABL Grand Final appearance.

Spectres Head Coach Dave Biwer thrilled to have his lead playmaker on the floor once again.

“I love that Mac has decided to lace them up again, he’s a high calibre guy and we’re better when he’s on the floor.”

“He’s a big-time leader of our team, he makes my job easier because he’s the one pushing everyone on the court to go up another level all the time.”

McDonald joins Tom Wright, Simon Conn, Jon Cooke and Costas Hronopoulos as the confirmed returnees for the Spectres, who are set to tip-off their inaugural NBL1 campaign on Friday 29 March at the Geelong Arena. The Spectres return to Nunawading for their ‘Home Opener’ the following night when they play host to Ballarat.

Tickets and memberships will be available online later this week.
