SPECTRES ADD STAR GUARD
NUNAWADING BASKETBALL | The Nunawading ‘Burwood One’ Spectres have boosted their women’s roster, confirming the addition of Australian sharp shooting guard Vanessa Panousis for the 2018 South East Australian Basketball League season.
Hailing from Sydney, Panousis spent 4-years at Virginia Tech in the NCAA, becoming the programs all-time leader in 3-point shots made midway through her senior season, connecting 269 times from long distance. During her time at Virginia Tech, Panousis was selected to represent the Emerging Opals at two World University Games (Summer Universiade), helping Australia claim gold in 2017.
Following on from a highly successful collegiate career, Panousis signed with the Adelaide Lightning for the 2017/2018 Women’s National Basketball League season where she was awarded the Coaches Award in her rookie season with the club adding testament to her work ethic and character.
“It’s exciting to be adding Vanessa to our team,” Spectres Head Coach Paul Flynn said.
“She’s a playmaker that’ll call the shots for us this season and gives us a genuine perimeter threat. Teams are going to have to play us up the floor because you give Ness half a look, she’s going to bury it.”
“Vanessa is someone we’ve been keeping an eye on for some time, she’s a quality young player that boasts a wealth of experience both internationally and here in Australia. We’re thrilled that she has chosen to call Nunawading home at an integral point in her professional career.”
Set to join the Spectres in late February, Panousis echoed the excitement from her home in Sydney.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Spectres, especially having competed against them in the National Junior Classic for so many years as a junior.”
“I can’t wait to learn everything I can from such a well-known association and professional organisation.”
Nunawading’s roster, becoming the eleventh player signed ahead of their season opener on April 7 when they play host to Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence. She’ll form a potent back court partnership with Izzy Chilcott, a pairing Spectres fans are sure to get excited about.
