SPECTRES MAKE STATEMENT AHEAD OF HOME OPENER
NUNAWADING BASKETBALL | The Nunawading Spectres South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) men’s team have made a bold statement ahead of their season and home opener, March 26 against Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence, by taking out the Big V Pre Season Tournament over the weekend.
Nunawading entered the tournament for the first time this year, having previously participated in a round robin weekend with SEABL counterparts in Horsham – home to All Star guard, Shane McDonald. Also entering the Big V Tournament in Championship Division; Dandenong Rangers SEABL Men, Waverley Falcons Big V Men and the Australian Goannas – Nationals Men’s Deaf Team.
The Spectres went through the tournament undefeated (4-0), utilising important game time to integrate newcomers Dain Swatella (import - Frankston), Tom Wright (Hobart) and Dyson King-Hawea (Ballarat) into the core group of returnees. The dynamic duo of Shane McDonald and Simon Conn again led from the front, sending an ominous warning to all SEABL opponents for the season ahead.
Getting through the preliminary games, Nunawading Head Coach (Dave) Biwer mixed his rotations, providing younger team members Ambros Eugster and Daniel Baxter plenty of experience with the senior players.
Nunawading then flexed their muscle in the final, defeating perennial Big V Championship contender Waverley 67-41. Simon Conn led all scorers with 20 points, with Swetalla (17 points) and Wright (14 points) also contributing double figures in the shortened game format.
The Nunawading Spectres now enter their final fortnight of preseason preparations ahead of a double-header home opener to the 2017 SEABL season, where both the women (12:00pm) and men (2:00pm) will square off against Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence.
