SPECTRES THROUGH TO PRELIM FINAL

SPECTRES THROUGH TO PRELIM FINAL

NUNAWADING BASKETBALL | The Nunawading ‘Burwood One’ Spectres have booked their ticket through to the SEABL Women’s Preliminary Final, following a 76-54 demolition of the Melbourne Tigers Saturday night.

The Spectres were clinical across the 40-minutes against a star-powered Tigers line-up, winning all but one quarter of play.

“We executed well at both ends of the floor,” Spectres Head Coach Paul Flynn said.

“When we do that, we’re hard to beat.”

Nunawading were paced on the scoreboard by Marena Whittle (24 points) and Vanessa Panousis (22 points) but it was the team-first approach that Flynn applauded post-game.

“We moved the ball through hands on the offensive end and sacrificed good shots for better shots. We were efficient and selfless - it was a good brand of basketball.”

Flynn was even more complimentary of his team’s defensive efforts after holding the Tigers, who had averaged 89-points per game over the last month to just 54-points for the contest.

“We did a great job defensively against a pretty potent line-up.”

“We implemented a few changeups during the week and had a clear focus on how we wanted to look defensively - to the girls’ credit, they executed that plan very well.”

“We forced a lot of mid to long range contested shots and then did a reasonable job keeping them off the offensive boards.”

The win now see’s the Spectres advance to Saturday’s Preliminary Final in Launceston against an inform Tornadoes side that took down Bendigo in the opening round of the post-season. The two sides meeting just the once in regular season competition, a 79-59 home win to the Spectres back in early June.

“It’s been a while since we’ve crossed paths and they’ve logged some impressive performances across the season. They’ve added an import in Courtney Williams since we last met which gives them incredible depth and we look forward to the challenge of walking into what will no doubt be an amazing environment with the aim of advancing to the SEABL Grand Final.”

With the game officially a sell-out, a small allocation of tickets has been reserved for Nunawading supporters to purchase. These will need to be purchased prior to 5:00pm Tuesday - please contact Nunawading Basketball Centre on 03 9802 6711 for more details.
