MELBOURNE – The emerging backcourt duo of Tayha Watkins and Taylah Schmidtke have re-signed with the Nunawading Spectres for the upcoming NBL1 South season, the club announced today.

“These two are integral pieces to our program, now and into the future,” Nunawading Basketball Operations Manager and NBL1 Women’s Head Coach Paul Flynn said.

“Both have worked incredibly hard over the off-season, investing time into their craft and it’s paying dividends already across pre-season.”

Watkins brings versatility to the Spectres line-up, with both size and skillset that can see her play in guard and forward positions.

“Tayha has the ability to impact a game on the offensive end in a variety of ways. She can score both inside and out, and possesses the strength to anchor  down and defend players bigger than her down the other end.”

“Choccy (Schmidtke) is a developing point guard who has served her apprenticeship behind Rach (Antoniadou) the past few seasons. We’re excited to elevate her full-time into the NBL1 team and know she’ll provide valuable on court direction to her teammates. Whilst she is a renowned pest defensively, it’s her offensive package that has taken the greatest leap this off-season and we’re excited to see that flourish this season”

Schmidtke captained the Spectres Big V Youth Championship side to a Grand Final appearance last season but will solely focus on NBL1 South across 2023.

Watkins and Schmidtke join Spectres Captain Rachel Antoniadou, Izzy Feller, and Emma Pearce as confirmed returnees to a Nunawading side that finished 4th in 2022. The team has been working impressively through the summer in preparation for Opening Night at The Graveyard against Mount Gambier on 2 April.
