Espectros de Nunawading

The Nunawading Spectres are the representative program of the Melbourne East Basketball Association (M.E.B.A. Inc.) offering aspirational athletes an opportunity to compete at state and national levels.

The Spectres have a long and proud history, from humble beginnings 60 years ago to becoming a powerhouse in Australian basketball. The Nunawading Spectres are synonymous with success and an iconic brand in the Australian sporting landscape that has produced more Australian Olympic and World Cup / Championship players and coaches than any other program in the country.

The pipeline continues to this day and in 2023 we saw multiple Spectres players and coaches go on to represent Victoria at the National Championships incl. Tom Dammers, Tristan Devers, Emilia Drmic, Madison Kamphausen, Gail Macfarlane, Taia McMechan, Maddy Potts, Tiernan Stynes, and Charlie Wilson plus many more taking part in Basketball Victoria’s High-Performance Pathway.

In addition to this, 2023 saw the Nunawading Spectres U14 Boys & Girls qualify for the Australian Club Championships for the second consecutive year – the only Victorian association to achieve dual qualification.

Representative basketball through VJBL competition officially begins at U12 level, although as a program we will look to expand to include U10 through the introduction of Development Squads / Tournament Teams.

For the upcoming VJBL 2023/2024 season, the Nunawading Spectres will compete in U12-U20 competitions.

Age Group Year of Birth
U12 2013-2015
U14 2011-2012
U16 2009-2010
U18 2007-2008
U20 2005-2006

Whilst our Nunawading Spectres representatives ‘graduate’ following their top age U18 season, the Nunawading Spectres Representative Program continues to provide a pathway beyond what is traditionally considered junior basketball.

The Nunawading Spectres also field teams in the following leagues / competitions each serving an important role in the development pathway – which may include collegiate basketball in the USA or transitioning into a professional basketball environment.

  • U20 VJBL
  • Big V Youth (U23)
  • NBL1 South
