How old do I have to be to referee at Nunawading?

Anyone wishing to become a referee, must be 15 years of age when the first theory session starts of each school. This is largely due to data which shows children are more likely to succeed and enjoy refereeing when they are older rather than younger.

You are never too old to start as a referee.

How do I get started?

Trainees are required to attend a Beginner Referee course which will take approximately 4 hours.

The Beginner Referee course will cost $100 which includes:

  • Course instructor and training materials
  • Whistle and lanyard
  • On-court mentoring with an experienced official as long as required
  • A loaned green shirt that identifies each trainee as a beginner referee, which is to be returned to the Association in good condition after the referee is graded to C Grade, at which time the referee will be supplied with a striped shirt at no further cost.

After attending the course trainee referees will be required to referee a minimum of three games a week with a mentor referee as a shadow, to put the theory that they have learned into practice. Obviously the more games a trainee works, the more chance they have to improve.

These games are usually completed on our junior competitions in the first instance, but may be adjusted to suit each trainee’s individual learning requirements. Our junior competitions are held during the times outlined below:

Day of the week Competition Start Time Competition Finish Time
सोमवार 4:00pm 7:00pm
शुक्रवार 4:00pm 10:00pm
शनिवार 8:00am 8:00pm

Are there any availability requirements?

At a minimum, referees are required to commit to a Friday or Saturday shift. Regular shifts are a minimum of 3 games – we can work around playing and/or coaching commitments. Referees are able to referee on other nights if there is room and they meet the competition requirements.

How long will it take for me to get be able to ref without a mentor/shadow?

The number of games/nights it takes a trainee to be able to referee by themselves (called an apprentice- still in a green shirt with a graded official) is individual to each trainee, as everyone reaches the required competencies at their own rate.

Once I am graded, how much will I get paid?

Payments are dictated by Basketball Victoria and vary dependent on the grade of the referee and the competition. Payments range from $13 per game for apprentices in training to $25 per game on Nunawading domestic competitions – trainees do not receive game payments.

A full schedule of payments for Technical Officials can be found HERE.

मैं रेफरी के रूप में कैसे सुधार करूंगा?

All referees are coached and observed regularly by our team of Mentors, Shift Supervisors, the Referee Program Manager and senior officials, who will all provide feedback and solutions to areas for improvement. This is coupled with experience you gain each week by being faced with challenges that you learn to overcome. With this experience and knowledge come better opportunities to referee higher quality games and be paid at a higher rate.

As much as I like the green shirt we have to wear, how long will it take me to get my stripes?

All grading is competency-based, and the amount of time it takes each referee to improve and be graded at a higher level is individual to each referee.

This all sounds great! I think I want to ref. When’s the next Beginner’s Course?

Beginner Referee courses are held on an as-need basis, but generally 2-3 times a year. To express an interest in becoming a referee, please fill out the Expression of Interest form HERE and we’ll be in touch.
