It is an exciting time for the Nunawading Basketball Centre (and East Burwood Reserve) and Melbourne East Basketball Association with Whitehorse City Council commencing work on the Master Plan that will guide the future use of the reserve for the next 15 years.

Over the past few years we have been working with Council, consultants and more recently the appointed project team on the needs of the Association and wider community and we need your help in showcasing the demand for basketball in the area to make our vision a reality.

As a brief history, the Nunawading Basketball Centre was built in 1969 (Courts 1 & 2) with extensions in 1983 (Courts 3 & 4) and 1989 (Court 5) and given its age, we believe the facility is nearing the end of its useful life.

The current venue has many limitations and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars in maintenance annually and with only 5 courts on site, is impossible to meet demand for the sport in the area.

Among the many issues to be addressed, we believe the key challenges of the current facility include:

  • Run-offs at the ends/sides of each court
  • Limited spectator seating (except Court 1)
  • Poor Air Conditioning
  • Lack of accessibility/seating space for wheelchairs
  • Older court surfaces (courts 2-5)
  • Court 1 grandstand/seating
  • Toilets/changerooms (court 4)
  • Inability to host regional/state/national events

Based on the size of the Association and venue usage data, we believe the facility should be expanded to 12 courts to meet current and future demand, while allowing for greater community access.

However, at a minimum we need 8-10 courts to meet current demand and allow for other potential regional/state/national events to be staged.

Whitehorse City Council are seeking feedback from the Community and have opened engagement from 4 July through to 7 August and will also be hosting a community feedback event on the reserve on Saturday 16 July.

Members and interested people of the community can provide feedback and ideas through https://yoursay.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/east-burwood-reserve

We’re asking all players, coaches, officials, supporters of Nunawading Basketball/Melbourne East Basketball Association (both current, past and potential future) to have input and share their ideas.

The more basketball voices at this stage the better, showing the demand for basketball in the area.

Kind Regards,
